Frequently Asked Questions

What are Units?

An NVQ consists of several units; some are mandatory and others optional. What units you must achieve to gain the qualification are normally shown in the NVQ structure/introduction section.

A unit describes what you are expected to do in particular aspects of your job. A unit is the smallest part of an award that is worthy of separate credit. Each unit consists of an introduction or overview that briefly describes the requirements and what you should be able to do, the standards, range and knowledge follows.

Depending on the NVQ, the unit may be sub-divided into elements that describe in further detail the abilities, skills and knowledge you should possess.

Each Unit/element has a set of performance criteria that specify the outcomes that you have to achieve in order to demonstrate competence.

Range/Scope indicates the contexts in which you must work. For example you must show that you can deal with different kinds of customers or lift products using different methods. They are usually placed by the performance criteria to emphasize that the two work hand in hand.

Derived from the standards, Knowledge and understanding shows what you know about your job and is considered essential for competent performance.

Evidence requirements indicate the minimum amount and type of performance evidence required. Examples are provided in some cases such as "a minimum of two observations of the learner carrying out whatever "task" or "a record of responses to questions asked by the assessor".
